As I anxiously approach my first Saturn return, I have been drawn to understanding this important and life-changing transit that we all experience around the ages of 30, 60, and 90. Planets are transiting and shifting signs all the time, but Saturn only changes signs about every 2.5 to 3 years and takes approximately 30 years to make a complete cycle through the zodiac. The longer a planet’s cycle, the bigger its impact.
Understanding Saturn: The Taskmaster of the Zodiac
Saturn is the planet of karma, rules, obstacles, and restrictions. It has an authoritative and disciplinarian energy similar to that of a father. While Saturn can be stern, like a parental figure, he only wants the best for us. We all came to Earth with a mission, and Saturn reminds us of what that mission is. We can look to our individual birth charts to see what house Saturn occupies, which can give us a clue about what area of our lives our souls agreed to work on in this lifetime. We can choose to listen to Saturn, learn the lessons, and pass the tests, or we can repeat the patterns and take the courses all over again. Saturn also teaches us about patience and hard work. As much as he wants us to grow and mature, he also has limitations and only rewards us when we deserve it. Our first Saturn return is our wake-up call.
The First Saturn Return: Embracing Adulthood
Everyone experiences their first Saturn return around the ages of 27-30. During this time, most of us start to come to terms with the fact that we are maturing and truly becoming adults. We start understanding the responsibilities that go along with adulthood and become aware that no one else is in control except us. As much as we like to blame our hardships on external circumstances, Saturn teaches us that we are 100% responsible for every action we take and every choice we make. If there are things in our life that make us unhappy or no longer align with the path that we are heading towards, it’s up to us to do something about it. This awakening triggers some people to make dramatic life decisions like changing careers, ending or starting serious relationships, moving cities, or starting a business. For many, this is the first big decision they ever make on their own, and it lays down the foundation for the next chapter of their lives.
The Second Saturn Return: Mid-Life Reflection
Saturn makes his second return around the time we turn 60. At this stage in life, with a new perspective and outlook on life, we have the next thirty years after our first Saturn return to make him, and ourselves, proud. During this mid-life period, we can start to integrate the lessons we learned around self-accountability and take control of our own happiness. By periodically assessing our situations and noticing how they affect us, we can continue to work with Saturn on the areas of our lives our soul agreed to perfect.
The Third Saturn Return: Lessons of Acceptance
By the time we reach our second Saturn return, hopefully, we have done the work and can look back at all our experiences with gratitude for the lessons they taught us. While we are never truly done learning, we’ve learned enough by now to know that life is meant to be enjoyed and we have nothing left to lose. For some of us, this is the last time Saturn will return, but for some, he will visit once more when we turn 90. This last lesson is usually one of acceptance as we come to face the end of our lives. While this can be an emotional time, Saturn helps us to see things from a realistic point of view.
Saturn: The Teacher of Life’s Greatest Lessons
Overall, Saturn can be one of the most important planets that we work with. He’s one of the strongest and most powerful planets in our charts. Although he can bring obstacles, they are only for our benefit. When we can accept his challenges and overcome them, we always come out stronger and wiser.
To Recap:
- First Saturn Return (27-30): This period marks the transition to true adulthood, teaching us responsibility and the importance of taking control of our lives. It often triggers major life decisions that set the foundation for our future.
- Second Saturn Return (58-60): By this stage, we integrate the lessons of self-accountability and control over our happiness. We use our wisdom to reassess and perfect our life paths, continuing our growth with a deeper understanding.
- Potential Third Saturn Return (around 90): For those who experience it, this return emphasizes acceptance and the reality of life’s impermanence. It’s a time to reflect on our journey with gratitude and a realistic perspective.
